Square Oak Coffee Tables

Our aim is to provide our customers with an alternative to modern mass produced furniture. We achieve this by using the best quality oak and ensuring that it’s joined together correctly.

Due to recent demand we now focus most of our efforts into making high quality solid oak coffee tables. Now that we have an internet presence we have found that much of our trade comes from a far wider region, and delivery of larger items can prove too expensive. An oak coffee table is relatively small and much easier to transport than larger items.

We now offer the customer a huge choice of style, size and finish, with customers being able design their own bespoke oak coffee table online. This has proved to be very popular with many customers spending hours on end deciding how they want their coffee table to look.

Our Oak

We prefer to buy locally grown English oak, which is sawn and dried locally. This depends entirely on the quality available at any given time; we sometimes find that the European or American oak available is superior, so we use that instead.

Oak varies tremendously - the grain, colour and character differs to the extent that no one piece of furniture will be exactly the same as another - so be cautious if you’re ever offered “solid oak” furniture that all looks the same.

The amount and type of character is down to the customer's taste, that said, it's worth bearing in mind that because oak is so varied, simply pointing out a piece of oak and asking us to make a eight foot square oak coffee table, with exactly the same character throughout isn’t really possible.

We find the best looking furniture contains a blend of different characters which we carefully work in to the piece.

Oak, even when kiln dried, is often prone to movement. You sometimes get small splits or different components can expand or contract at different rates giving a slightly uneven finish. Some are of the opinion that this all adds to the character, which to an extent is true. That said, every attempt should be made to ensure that this process isn’t too rapid.

Oak doesn’t like excessive heat. Placing a new oak coffee table directly in front of a red hot fire or radiator should be avoided, especially in winter when the oak is more than likely cold following delivery. It’s also advised to keep new oak away from direct sunlight.
